Materials

When creating woodcrafts, there are a variety of materials you can choose from to further customize your gift.

Woods

Padauk – This orange wood is known for its durability, bright color, and high potential for chatoyancy. Although it can be just as beautiful as many high-end woods, this is one of the less expensive woods available for projects.

Purpleheart – As suggested by its name, this is one of the few woods with a natural purple hue. The trees that produce this beautiful wood are extremely durable and found primarily near Mexico and Brazil. It has a beautiful grain pattern that lends itself to chatoyance.

Ebony – The antithesis to ivory has a dark rich color that closely resembles that of dark piano keys. Ebony is in the same family as persimmon and is dense enough to sink when placed in water. Pricewise, ebony is a medium-to-higher-end material.

Rosewood – Just as roses come in many colors, this popular wood can come in many shades and hues. The veins are often very pronounced, creating rich tones that make your wood gifts stand out.

Walnut – Wood from the walnut tree is a popular choice in wood projects, especially as embellishments or in combination with other complimentary woods. Walnut is more expensive than common woods like maple or cherry, but less expensive than specialty woods like ebony or african blackwood.

African Blackwood – Native to central and southern Africa, this wood is one of the hardest, densest woods in existence. It has a dark, rich color comparable to ebony, and it is popular for high-end gifts such as pool cues, knife handles, or vape pens.

Acrylics

While there are technically different categories on acrylics, these subtle differences wouldn’t be noticeable to the average person. Instead, the thing to know about acrylics is that they can be dyed all different colors and patterns. Acrylics can also be combined with various woods to create accented pieces where the bright colors of the acrylic contrast the subtle tones of the wood to create a truly beautiful custom piece.

Hardware

When creating a custom pen, your chosen hardware can completely transform the look and feel of your pen. While most pens will have a standard hardware set, some pens can also be customized by adding styled clips that represent the interests of the user. We can add hardware clips to represent healthcare professionals, police, firefighters, military, fishing, golf, and many other hobbies or professions.

The most common hardware finishes include:

  • Metallic
  • Brass
  • Silver
  • Pewter
  • Gold

High end finishes can also be decorated with gems or other accents for an even more distinct look.
